PIRA 2A20.20 - Surface
Tension: Lamella
Photo Shows the Apparatus Used at U.T. Austin
Instructions / Notes:
-
Start by rotating the circular handle to lift the labjack such that the surface tension ring is fully submerged in the water. Record the force measured by the dynamometer.
-
Slowly lower the labjack until you see a lamella form (a raised portion if the water that hugs up against the tension ring - pictured below).
-
Once the lamella breaks, measure the force.
Concepts Conveyed:
- Display the strength of surface tension.
- Determine the amount of energy contained in the lamella.
Close up of the lamella. It appears as a bubble just below the ring.
