Alex Demkov receives 2011 IBM Faculty Award

UT Physics Professor Alex Demkov has received a 2011 IBM Faculty Award. He is one of only two physicists to receive it this year.

The IBM Faculty Awards is a worldwide competitive program. Nominations for these awards must be initiated by someone within IBM. The awards are meant to foster collaboration between researchers at leading universities worldwide and those in IBM research, development, and services organizations, as well as to promote courseware and curriculum innovation to stimulate growth in disciplines and geographies that are strategic to IBM.

Faculty Awards are cash awards granted annually. Professor Demkov plans to use the award money in his Materials Physics Lab to support research on epitaxial oxides. He mostly works with perovskites, which show a wide range of interesting physical properties from ferroelectricity to ferromagnetism and superconductivity. His particular niche is integration of these functional materials with semiconductors such as silicon.
