Graduate student receives William Powers, Jr. Fellowship

Congratulations to Physics graduate student Hosung Seo, who received the 2012 William Powers, Jr. Fellowship!

Hosung is in the fourth year of our graduate program. He came to UT with a Master’s Degree from Northwestern University and is expected to graduate in the Spring of 2013. Hosung works on first-principles calculations of oxide heterostructures and effects of strain on magnetic oxides. He currently studies the problem of ferromagnetism in strained LaCoO3, where he has already contributed to our understanding of how tensile strain couples to the exchange coupling in this fascinating material. The work has recently appeared in the Applied Physics Letters. Despite being only a fourth year graduate student, Hosung has already published six research articles and has given seventeen presentations at national and international Physics meetings. This January, for his work on magnetism in epitaxial LaCoO3, Hosung received the Young Scientist Award at the Physics and Chemistry of Surfaces and Interfaces (PCSI) conference in Santa Fe, NM.
