ABOUT
ME
I
am a
graduate student at the Physics Department at UT Austin in my seventh
year. My fields of interest
are
Many Body Theory, Theoretical Condensed Matter
Physics,
Theoretical Solid State Physics, and The Theory of Dynamical Systems. I graduated
from the 2-year Master of Science in Physics
at the
Indian
Institute of
Technology, Kanpur in
2002.
Thus, I went through the
usual ennui
of assignments, project presentations, mid-semester
and
end-semester
examinations on a daily basis
for a long time.
However, occasionally one managed to ferret out some interesting
physics from
this quotidian medley. Despite the ubiquitous melancholy of
post-semester stress disorder, I cultivated an interest in many-body
theory and the Physics of Condensed Matter during my stint at
I.I.T.
I had previously completed my
undergraduate from the Physics Department of
Jadavpur
University,
Calcutta
. I had
my first
real exposure to this difficult but fascinating science then in the
form of a study and research project on the Theory of Dynamical Systems
and Chaos. The fruits of this labor were published shortly afterwards.
I am presently working towards a doctorate at the The Center for Complex Quantum Systems
of the Physics Department
under Professor Linda
Reichl on the Dynamics of quantum control in cold-atom Bose-Einstein condensates.
I grew up in the city of Bombay,
where I
lived with my
folks. My father is
a
particle
physicist at the Tata
Institute of
Fundamental Research.
My mother is
a recently retired
plasma physicist who worked in the Indian
Institute of
Geomagnetism.
I also have a sister who is currently a
researcher in Molecular Biology and a staff scientist at Stanford
University,
California.
She lives
in the San Francisco Bay Area with my brother in law and her two kids.
I
enjoy listening to western classical music
(Favorites: J.S. Bach,
Beethoven,
Mozart, Handel, Schubert, Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky- Korzakov),
and like to read a lot of science
fiction
(specifically Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke and Robert Silverberg). I
am also
an avid fan of Star Trek and all its spin-offs, both small and big
screen. I am an avid user of the powerful and open-source Linux
operating system, and greatly enjoy
learning more about it's intricacies.
