Forwarding your e-mail to another address

If you are permanently closing your account (graduating, leaving UT, etc.) and want your old address to be forwarded to your new location, please contact us and we will set up an alias for your account. This will allow your mail to continue to reach you even after your account has been closed.

If you are not closing your account, but you want all of your physics.utexas.edu e-mail to be forwarded elsewhere, you can do so using a .forward file.

To use this method, log into your account and open your favorite text editor (vi, emacs, etc.). Create a new text file containing nothing but a single line containing the address that you would like your e-mail to be forwarded to. Save this file as .forward (note the “.” dot at the beginning), in your home directory.

Once this file is in place, all subsequently received email will be forwarded to the specified address. (Note that this will have no effect on mail already received; those messages will remain in your mailbox, unchanged.) To stop the forwarding, simply remove or rename the file.
