The Grad Lab
-
The Graduate Physics Computer Lab is located in RLM 9.326.
It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (as long as
the University and RLM are open, anyway).
-
You can log into any of the Grad Lab Linux machines (all
of the machines in the Lab except for the Windows
workstation) using your physics
account login. (The Windows machine is managed by the
PMCL. Contact
them for information on getting an account on that machine.)
-
Public Machines
-
There are several Linux machines in the Grad Lab. For these
machines, you can log in directly at the console. All of these
systems are running the X Windows graphical interface. (You
can choose from several window managers, including KDE, Gnome,
and others. You can also log in using the standard text console.)
You can also log into any of these machines, as well as the other
public machines, via SSH. We support both SSH1 and SSH2; if you
have a choice (and you usually do), we recommend using SSH2.
If you absolutely have to use TELNET, you can do so only from
within RLM. However, you should always use SSH unless there
is an extremely good reason not to (and there usually isn't).
-
The 15 general-purpose Linux machines are named
linux1.ph.utexas.edu through linux15.ph.utexas.edu.
All of these except for linux2 and linux15 are
located in RLM 9.326 (the Grad Lab). There is also a remote
computational Linux machine named twist.ph.utexas.edu.

Performance Information
-
The Linux machine specifications are as follows:
- linux1, linux3-linux15: 3.0 GHz Pentium 4 with
1 GB of RAM
- linux2: Dual 450 MHz Pentium III with
1 GB RAM
- twist: Dual 3.2 GHz XEON with hyperthreading and
3 GB RAM

Removable Media and CD Burning
-
All machines in the Grad Lab in RLM 9.326 have a floppy drive
and a DVD Reader with CD-R/RW burner.
CD-ROMs should work automatically work (just insert the disk
and Linux should auto-detect and mount it). The easist way to
use floppy disks is via the mtools
package. For more information on using removable media, see
the Linux FAQ.
For information on using the CD recorder to burn a CD-R or
CD-RW, see the CD burner instructions.
