Spintronics is a multidisciplinary field of research which aims at the active control and manipulation of spin distributions in solid-state systems. The prize to be gained by achieving this goal is a revolutionary new class of electronic devices based on the spin degree of freedom of the electron in addition to the charge. Spin injection, spin manipulation, and spin detection are the three essential building blocks for such spintronic devices.

The objective of the spintronics portion of this IGERT program is to advance fundamental understanding of spin injection/manipulation/detection mechanisms in dimensionally constrained nonmagnetic/magnetic (N/M) materials, including spin accumulation at N/M metal and semiconductor interfaces, at the nanoscale.
