Error-tolerance in TT-system

An excerpt from a student’s email message: I had a quick question. I just completed HW3 and after over 2 hours on problem #7 I gave up. After looking at the solutions I noticed that because I rounded Voy=5.01 to 5 early on my final calculation of 1.15 wasn't close enough to 1.17. I was just curious what the tolerance is for the fill in answers. Its very frustrating to find out I wasted that much time and I was doing the correct method the entire time. This is in no way a complaint, I'm just curious for future reference what kind of buffer there is on the answer blanks.

Response from Herb Ward (Programmer responsible for TT-system):

The default tolerance is +/- 1 percent.  This is explained in

                https://ttt.ph.utexas.edu/numeric.html

For the students, links to this page occur in two places:

   1. The general student instructions.

   2. Immediately adjacent to the box where the student
      types numeric answers.

The link for #2 is currently labeled "help".  I will change the label
to "instructions", so that students will have less excuse for misunder-
standing the +/- 1 percent tolerance.

Let me know if this is not clear.

Thank you,
Herbert
