FAQ related to the iq-score in student’s TT-account

Q: How is the iq-score determined?

A: Below is an excerpt from the Firstday-handout: 8.4.a).

An iq-score is given when there is one or more interactive sessions during a lecture.

·         iq-score=1, if there is at least one correct answer recorded;

·         iq-score =0.8, if there is at least one answer recorded and none of the answers are correct;

·         iq-score=0, if there is no answer recorded.

Q: How does the overall iq-record effect the semester grade?

A. In the last week of class, there will be a “iq-record check” to check whether iq-score (after 4 drops) > 80% (again see the Firsdayday-handout 8.4.a) ). This is one of the necessary conditions to achieve the “good participation status”.

Q. Today my I-clicker was not working. I have attended the class, and answer the iq-question on paper. Is there anyway to credit my iq-score in the TT-account?

A. It is our policy there is no adjustment on iq-score in this course. The point is that we have set up the iq-record check criteria sufficiently lenient, occasional absence of iq-score should not effect the positive outcome of the “iq-record check”. In case of the exceptional situation where a student has been attending and participating in the class on a regular basis and yet has failed the iq-record check, there is still an alternate way to verify student’s effort toward achieving his/her gp-status. This is described in 8.4.b) of the Firstday-handout.

Instructor’s comments: As you can see as long as you attend the class and participate in the class, our policy guarantees you to have a positive outcome in the “iq-record check”. During this semester, from time to time we will intersperse iq-sessions with the lecture with following objectives in mind:

·         to check your understanding,

·         to give you a chance to interact with your neighbor, i.e. to have collaborative learning experience,

·         to keep you alert, to enable you to see where you stand with respect to the rest of the class

·         to give the instructor invaluable feed back, which will help the instructor to fine-tune his presentation.

I hope during this semester we will all work together to have a good atmosphere in our classroom conducive to learning.
