Capacitor & Dielectrics
Capacitances of capacitors with different symmetries :
- |Parallel plate capacitor
- Spherical capacitor
- Cylindrical capacitor
- Determination of energy stored in a capacitor:
General method
Effect due to the presence of dielectrics
- On E
- On V
- On U. The fixed Q case vs
the fixed V case.
Capacitor net work
- Series and || connections
- The deformation rule
- Capacitor with partially filled dielectrics.
Natural flow of energy: High U to low U.
- Motion of a positive charge
- Motion of a negative charge
- Motion of a dielectric slab
Reminders:
- Instructor’s informal session’s today. See above
for time and place.
- Monday class(2/11):
Review unit 1. I will highlight topics covered in unit 1.
- Wed class (2/13): Begin chapter 27. A simple
question on the material covered in the class may be included in midterm 1.
However, HW5 will not be included in midterm 1.
- In view of the fact that next week is the “midterm-week”,
HW5 will be relatively short.
Preparation
for midterm 1:
- Course summary: It contains the basic formula you
need to know.
§
We suggest that
you use it as a check-list as you study each chapter.
§
Download page 1
of the course summary, if you have not done it.
§
A fresh course
summary will be included in your exam package, it is important for you to get familiar
with it prior to the exam.
- Textbook: Skim through the text. Go through
figures and examples (especially the ones related to your homework
problems.)
- Homework problems: Understand the physics of each
problem.
- Consult your class-notes for clarification.
- Pay special attention to the in-class-review of
the unit.
