Spherical symmetry (con’d)

• A uniformly charged sphere + a conducting shell
• E vs r
• Total charge on the inner surface of the shell, q’ and that on the outer surface, q”.
• A theorem

Cylindrical symmetry

• A long uniformly charged rod

Planar symmetry

• One uniformly charged plate (assume it is large with “infinite extent”)
• Compare the r-dependences of the three symmetries
• Three uniformly charged plates
