- Instructor’s weekly informal sessions:
Tu 3:30-4:20, RAS 213 ; Fri 4-5, RLM 5.104
Lecture: 8 Potential
and Potential energy + capacitor
Demos:
- Hair on end, Motion of charged particle, E-patterns
- Energy stored in a capacitor
V to E: A dipole system
- E at P with coordinate (x,y)
- E at P where x>>a.
E to V:
- A long rod with a constant linear charge density
- A large plate with a constant areal
(“surface”) charge density
Distance dependence of V and E:
- The larger is the spatial extent of the source
charge, the slower is the decrease in E.
Parallel plate capacitor:
- Energy stored: U
- Energy density: u=U/volume
Reminders:
- Instructor’s informal session on today. See above
for time and place.
- For any unresolved pre-requisite and co-requisite
issues, please contact physics departmental coordinator: Pat Morgan (1-8856,
RLM5.216) asap.
