Reading response sheet#1 on chapter 21 is due next Wednesday (09/06/2000)!

The powers of ten: use the handout I provided you with and come up with 5 examples of computations dealing with the powers of ten.

If you haven't done the computer simulation yet and you want to get a credit for it (see the previous hw), please do it by Monday. Remember to bring your description of what you have done.

Labs:Unit XI, activity 1, procedures 3,4&5 to be completed at home.

Remember to get a credit for the lab you have to do all the assignments: such as RRS (reading response sheet, computer simulation, etc.),

Discussion on the nature of magnetic phenomena (continued form Wednesday). We will clarify how:
to create an electromagnet!
how to determine the polarity of electromagnet!
We will learn how to find magnetic forces exerted on moving particles.
We will discuss a few problems from HW5.

GOOD LUCK TO MIDTERM EXAMINATION

(10% of your final grade!)

HW 6 is DUE TODAY by 10PM.

The midterm examination will include 25 multiple choice questions and will last for one hour and thirty minutes (90 minutes total). The format will be very similar to your quizzes, however it will be longer.

It will be open book and open notes, but you won't be allowed to consult with anybody.

To prepare look through your HW problems (HW 1-6), the units (XI-XIV) and the quizzes.  

Please don't forget to bring your CALCULATORS!

Dear Students,

I would like to thank everybody for your hard work and intensive preparation to the midterm. The average midterm grade of all the students (there are 59 students in the three sections I teach) is 78!!! The highest grade was 96! Most of you have done a great job! Although, the midterm is only equal to 10% of your final grade I value the effort you put into it!

We have completed the first half of the semester. The second half of the semester will include the topics: waves, sound, and geometrical optics. These topics will be represented in the final exam!

Class discussion: chapter 18.

Please bring your RRS about chapter 18. It is related to the unit. We will discuss the most interesting concepts from your readings and will find out how they are related to the unit..

Unit XV, activity 1 and activity 2.

Project discussion and group work on your projects.

You will have an opportunity to ask me about the project, and will take a look at the examples of the most successful projects form the previous years.

Due on Monday October 30:

Unit XV - activity 1, procedure 1. You have to complete this procedure at home.

Textbook: Chapter 18 to read and to bring RRS.

Project:

You have to keep working on your project. In two weeks each group will report their progress (see stage "progress evaluation" on the project web site). Please start researching your topic and discuss in your group what you have learned. E-mail me your question if you have one.
Remember, you have to share your knowledge with your group members. You have to share your expertise and be sure that each one of you is competent about the project.
Think about the aides you will use to demonstrate your project. One of the students gave us a great idea to contact the companies manufacturing these products and ask them if they can send you some materials about the products. They often have very popular materials and they will be glad to share them with you!
Don't forget to visit the project web site. It has a lot of important information!
I will bring the project meeting forms. Please fill them in every week and include at least four forms in your project portfolio!
Remember that the best way to fail your project is to postpone it for the last moment!

Our new topic! OPTICS.

We are starting today our last topic! We will experiment with light and we will learn different things about optical phenomena in everyday life such as reflection and refraction, diffraction and interference. We will focus on geometrical optics and will experiment with lenses, mirrors and other optical elements.

We have a new equipment for this topic and we will use it!!! I will distribute the activities-handouts in class, so you won't need to use a lab manual for this topic! This Unit will be due at the last class day: December 6th.

UNIT XV is due today! I am not going to accept it after this date. You have to complete all the unit (except from the table in the activity 4) including all the problems at the end of the unit. You will submit the unit today and I will carefully grade it!
Textbook: Chapters 25, 26, and 27. You do not have to bring a RRS for any of these chapters.

About the Friday PowerPoint Workshop

You are welcome to attend a special workshop on creating effective PowerPoint presentations. We will meet on Friday, November 17: From 2-30PM till 3-30PM in RLM 7th floor PMCL - Physics Math Computer Lab. This lab is on the 7th floor below the PS labs. Be sure to sign-up for a 25 minute presentation during one of the three following classes! You will present your project for 20 minutes, and then you will be asked questions about your project during 5 minutes. After that everybody in the audience will evaluate the quality of your presentation!

Comments: Every presentation will last up to 25 minutes. After that we will have 5 minutes for questions from the audience and a few minutes for presentation peer evaluation. I will bring you teh forms. Think about a few interesting questions you will ask the audience to make sure we understood what you presented.

Please don't forget to prepare effective visual aides, handouts or whatever you need to make your presentation interesting and appealing to us! Please visit again the project Web site to find more about preparing effective presentation and the requirements.

Please include all the evaluations in your final portfolio which will be due at the date of the Final!
