Text: Physics for Engineers and Scientists, Vol. 2 (3rd Edition) by Ohanian and Markert. The course covers Chapters 22-35 plus selected topics from Chapter 36. See attached Syllabus for schedule of lectures.
Administrative Issues: Pat Morgan, Undergraduate
Office, RLM 5.216, 471-8856
Pre- and Co-Requisites: Physics 303K and 103M; Mathematics 408D, or 408L and concurrent enrollment in 408M; and credit or registration in Physics 103N. If you do not appear to have met the requirements, you will be receiving an email on the first class day, Wednesday August 26, and again on the 5th class day, Wednesday September 1, informing you to see Pat Morgan in RLM 5.216. If the problem is not corrected by the 12th class day, Friday September 11, you will be dropped from the class.
Grading: Course grades will be weighted as follows: Homework 15%, In-Class Quizzes 5%, TA Session 5%, Midterm Exams 45%, and Final Exam 30%. Final grades will be determined by a class curve and no prescribed cutoff values should be assumed.
Homework: You will download the homework and submit
your answers on the web at https://quest.cns.utexas.edu.
Homework is due each week on Tuesday night (Wednesday 4 AM). Solutions will be
available after the due time. The lowest two homework grades will be dropped in
calculation of the semester grade. Read the students’ instructions and FAQ at https://quest.cns.utexas.edu/student/help/view
and http://cns.utexas.edu/quest/support/student/.
You are encouraged to work together on the homework. You must, however, submit
your own work for credit.
Midterm Exams and Final Exam: There will be 4 evening midterm exams from 6 to 8 PM on Fridays September 18, October 9, October 30, and November 20 in WEL 1.308. The lowest midterm grade will be dropped in calculation of the semester grade. No makeup midterm will be given. If a student misses a midterm, the missing one will be the one that will be dropped. The final exam is comprehensive and mandatory and will be held on Wednesday December 9, 9 AM - noon, as indicated in the Course Schedule. During each exam, (1) a fresh copy of the formula sheet(s) will be provided to you and no other materials will be allowed, and (2) programmable calculators may be used for numerical calculations only. Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
In-Class Quizzes: We intersperse lectures with interactive quiz questions chosen to highlight the course materials. In order to participate, you will need to purchase an i-Clicker remote (available at the Co-op) and then register it by entering the serial number on the back of your i-Clicker (include leading zeros) under “My Profile” in Quest. When you return to the Quest menu and select this course, you will find your “Clicker Box #” in the information box. Be sure to make note of your box number which you will need when using the clicker in class. See instructions at http://cns.utexas.edu/quest/support/student/. We will begin to use the clickers from Monday August 31. The lowest 6 in-class quiz grades will be dropped. Note that the number of drops is intended to compensate for the absence due to legitimate excuses as well as occasional non-participation due to clicker-related problems. There will be no manual adjustment on the in-class quiz score. Examples of quiz questions can be found at https://www.ph.utexas.edu/~itiq/303L/chiu/physiquiz/ and http://www.ph.utexas.edu/~itiq/iq/303L/iqL.html.
TA Session: TA session is an integral part of this course. During each session, the TA will reiterate the course materials, work out examples similar to homework problems, or provide hints to solving homework problems. TA session grade will be determined by attendance or another method which will be announced by your TA. The session will start next week.
PHY 103N: The 103N lab is a separate course and is a co-requisite of this course. The lab will begin the week of August 31.
Drop Dates: The last day to drop a course for a possible refund is Friday September 11. The last day to drop the course without academic penalty is Wednesday September 23. The last day to drop the course with approval is Wednesday October 21.
