GRAVITY!!

Every object in the universe attracts every other object, with a force depending on the product of the masses of the two objects, on the distance between their centers, and on a universal force constant G.

The only force acting on an orbiting body is gravity.

Put a Planet into Orbit!

The only force acting is gravity.

If we move an object a very tiny distance h away from the earth's surface, ΔU = U(RE + h) − U(RE). If we use U(r) = −GMEm/r, then we can get a common denominator to get an h dependence of [RE - (RE + h)]/((RE + h)RE) and if we now use the fact that h is negligible compared to the radius of the earth, we wind up with ΔU ≃ (GMEm h)/RE2. But we know that g = GME/RE2 so we find that if h is vanishingly small compared to the planet radius, we wind up with the crude approximation ΔU ≃ mgh. It should never be used for any homework or example in this chapter.
