Lecture 18: Newton’s law of gravity - II

  • Kepler’s “laws” –Empirical regularities

·         Elliptic orbit

·         dA/dt=constant

·         T µ r3/2

  • Potential energy of the satellite at r due to a mass-center M.
  • Total energy of a satellite with an orbital radius r, due to a mass-center M.
  • Applications using the W-E theorem

·         Rising-ball in the outer space to a maximum height

·         Launching a satellite into an orbit

·         Minimum initial velocity which allows the escape of the rocket from the earth gravitational force.

Reminders:

  • Continue to read chapter 9, work on text examples and PQ-examples.
  • After today’s lesson, we will have covered all the material for hw7.
