Lecture 19: Newton’s law of gravity-III

  • The physics of  Kepler’s laws
  • Two basic energy formulas:

·         Potential energy of the at r due to a mass M.

·         Total energy of a satellite with a mass m, a circular orbit with a radius r, and a mass-center M.

  • Applications using the work-energy theorem

·         Launching a satellite into an orbit

·         Minimum initial kinetic (or Wext) needed for a rocket to escape earth gravitational force. 

 

Reminders:

  • Instructor’s informal session today: 4-5pm, HW7.
  • HW7 is due 4am on Monday (10/13), think of it as due on Sunday evening.
  • Midterm2: Wed. 10/15, 7pm.
    • It covers Chapters 5-9 and hw4-7 (unit #2).
    • Please review all formula in the course summary through chapter 9.
    • Also, pay attention to next Wednesday’s lecture.
  • Next Monday’s class: Review unit 2.
